Is it homemade or made from scratch?

That is my question to all who read my blog.

I had been rather proud of myself lately for making more food at home, you know the meal that has three of your four burners going, because maybe you're following a recipe and not just throwing a store bought casserole in the oven. Anyway, I was spending alot of time in the kitchen trying to use all the ingredients I had on hand before going shopping again, so I was proud. That is until I heard how some women make everything from scratch. Notice the emphasis on the word everything. That got me thinking, what in the heck have I been doing and how on earth do they have the time to cook meals from scratch? I thought that was what I was doing and just considering it homemade, but still what is the difference really? See to me "homemade" is just that, it's home-made. So last time I made "homemade" lasagna I boiled the noodles which I bought at the store, cooked the meat, stirred in the sauce, again store bought, then layered with different cheeses and then baked. So if there is a difference between homemade and scratch and I like to call it homemade then made from scratch would mean you mix up some dough and roll it out in your handy dandy pasta cutter, let it dry, then proceed to make the rest of the meal from scratch, mash your own tomatoes for the sauce, you see where I am going. So tell me fellow bloggers, what exactly does "made from scratch" mean, and is that I have been doing this whole time and calling it homemade? Are they one in the same, because frankly I feel kinda overwhelmed thinking I should be grinding my own wheat to make bread.

Girl, if you start grinding your own wheat, and making your own noodles, you will be my new hero. I consider what you said you do, to be homemade. I love to cook from scratch or make things homemade, and I think they are one in the same. I don't have enough time in my day to be grinding corn, and wheat and churning my own stinkin butter!! lol

I consider throwing some fries in the oven and eating a McDonalds cheeseburger alongside it hard work!! I mean I DID heat up the fries!

Sounds like your cooking homemade for sure.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say that I think of homemade and "from scratch" pretty much the same as you. Kind of different, but not really LOL

If you make a chicken casserole with chicken, veggies, a can of cream of chicken soup and a box of stove top stuffing...I consider it homemade. Make your own soup and stuffing and you've got a meal from scratch. That is how I think of it anyhow.

It sounds like if you're making a dinner that you are sitting and eating as a family, you're doing a fabulous job whether the dinner was bought all ready to go into the oven or not. I think that from scratch is maybe the churning and all in which case, I won't be doing that anytime soon. Homemade is good, sounds like that's what you're doing. We do that here too.....yes, my chickens out in the coop are off the hook...

I think its the same yet different, if that makes sense. I consider when I cook a meal that its homemade, whether I use a can of something or whatever. I have never made my own noodles/pasta and don't intend to! BUT grinding wheat really is easy. I haven't done it personally but I've seen it done- it is quick and amazing and the bread is delicious and so much healthier. So maybe this year I'll invest in a wheat grinder, especially since I'm moving to farmland. Then I'll have to wear my denim jumpers (or buy some) to fit the whole 'homeschool' image;)

Hey, I was watching Food Network while cleaning today and saw a show called Partially Homemade. I am going to try to find it. But she had great recipes that you could make out of already made bread dough. No wheat grinding and waiting for bread to rise. I used to grind my own wheat and make bread. Until I found out I had Celiac Desiese and couldn't eat it! I was crazy, maybe I still am?
